![]() ![]() Over recent years, feminist activism and participation in India has been gaining mainstream coverage where news headlines celebrate the efforts of women from all walks of life in fighting sexual violence and inequities. ![]() Feminist humor, then, emerges as a form of feminist resistance and subversion that employs cutting humor and punchlines to reject existing societal codes, gender norms that dictate what people can or cannot do or how to behave based on their gender, and shows the possibilities of a politics that is hopeful and playful. The paper argues that though the shelf life of internet memes is short, and the participation of those doing feminism in the network is restricted to a certain section of the population, it is nevertheless important for such content to be produced, because it is the everyday words, norms, and taboos that are being reclaimed and re-negotiated with or rejected in the process of their generation and circulation. This paper explores one specific form of online feminist humor- memes, a fairly understudied phenomenon in India, in order to examine the cause, context in which such humor arises, and content. ![]() With online comics, satirical parody news sites, internet memes (Meme macros and video memes), web comics gaining popularity in recent years, Indian feminists are exploring multiple ways to engage in dialogue, and humor is one such. ![]()
